Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman: No North Korea’s Espionage can run any Business in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH:  Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman and international cooperation has completely rejected a report alleging that “North Korean spies have opened hotels,casinos and travel agencies in Cambodia” published in NK News on 15 February,2022. As a member of the United Nations, Cambodia has complied with all United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, closing all businesses and bank accounts of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the spokesman said in Cambodia and also stopped issuing work permits to workers from the DPRK.

 In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 17 February, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Cambodia has complied with UN resolutions since 2018 and closed all businesses and bank accounts that Involved in North Korea as well.

The statement said :"On 1 March 2018, the Royal Government of Cambodia established a Inter-Ministerial Working Group to review all documents and investigations of companies and businesses of DPRK, The Inter-Ministerial ad hoc working group has conducted at least nine meetings, co-chaired by MFAIC and the Ministry of commerce, to decide on concreate measures to in compliance with various types of sanctions,as prescribed in the UNSC resolution. As a result, seven bank accounts in two different financial institutions have been closed since 2017. Cambodia has shut down all DPRK businesses, including restaurants and museums operating in Cambodia."

In 2019, the Ministry of Commerce also deregistered the name Glory Worldwide Glow Co.Ltd of DPRK’s list was removed from the list and researched the companies listed in its system, finding 12 companies, including Mansudae New Tech Corporation Ltd, which was associated with the DPRK.

The spokesman said: "All of them have been deregistered on 30 December 2019. Eight restaurants have had their licenses registered and shut down on 5 December 2019."

Since 2017, Cambodia has completely stopped providing work permits to workers from the DPRK. As of 30 November 2019, the Royal Government has decided not to extend visas to DPRK citizens working in Cambodia.
